Sleep Microclimate: What Happens Under Your Duvet on a Warm Summer Night?

It’s two in the morning, late July. The window is wide open, but not a breath of cool air comes in from outside. You’re lying on your back, the duvet pushed halfway down the bed, one leg sticking out from under it, the pillow flipped to the cooler side for the third time already. In a moment you’ll get up for a glass of water. And so it goes, every hour.
Everyone knows nights like these. But few people realise that the problem doesn’t lie in the room temperature – or at least not only there. The real game plays out in the few centimetres of air between your skin and the duvet. That’s where it’s decided whether you sleep through the night or keep waking up. This layer has a name: the sleep microclimate.
What is the sleep microclimate?
When you lie covered by a duvet, an enclosed space forms between your body and the filling – one with its own temperature and humidity, independent of what’s happening in the rest of the room. It’s a bit like a miniature climate under the covers: you have your own weather down there, your own temperature and your own moisture level.
Sleep research points fairly consistently to an optimal temperature for that layer at the skin of around 30–32°C, with relative humidity of about 50 percent. When those values hold, the body sleeps peacefully. When the temperature climbs higher or moisture builds up, the brain receives a discomfort signal and wakes you so you shift position, uncover yourself or flip the pillow.
On a warm summer night, this mechanism goes off balance most easily. And that’s precisely why sleep is worse in summer – not because of the air temperature itself, but because the body finds it harder to maintain a healthy microclimate under the duvet.
Why does the body need a duvet in the heat, even when it seems it doesn’t?
It’s an apparent paradox. On a hot night, the first instinct is to throw everything off. And yet most people, even in the heat, can’t fall asleep completely uncovered – and that isn’t just habit.
During sleep, especially in the deep phase, body temperature naturally drops. Towards morning, between three and five, it reaches its lowest point. At that moment a body that was warm in the evening can start to feel cold – even if the room is still warm. Hence the familiar sensation: you fall asleep uncovered and towards dawn you reach for the duvet and wrap yourself in it tightly.
There’s also the matter of protection from moving air. A fan or air conditioning, though they bring relief, carry heat away from the skin’s surface unevenly. A thin duvet acts as a buffer – it evens out those differences and protects against localised cooling, which can also wake you.
So the answer isn’t sleeping without a duvet, but sleeping under the right one – one that helps keep the microclimate in check rather than throwing it off.
Three things that ruin the microclimate on a warm night
- Moisture with nowhere to go. We always sweat at night, even in winter – and many times more in summer. Over a single warm night the body can release up to a litre of sweat. If the duvet’s filling and the cover fabric don’t wick that moisture outwards, it collects in the layer next to the skin. It turns clammy, stuffy and steadily warmer, because humid air conducts heat differently than dry air. This is the most common cause of summer waking.
- Filling that traps heat instead of releasing it. Cheap synthetic fillings, especially compacted polyester, form a sealed barrier. They warm beautifully in winter, but in summer they become a heat trap – holding in body heat instead of letting it disperse. Under a duvet like this, the temperature at the skin rises quickly and has no way to fall.
- A fabric that doesn’t breathe. Even the best filling won’t help if the duvet’s cover is made of a dense, non-breathable fabric. That cover is the first and last barrier for air and moisture. Natural fabrics – cotton, cambric, linen – let them pass freely. Synthetics often block them.
What does a good duvet for warm nights look like?
A good summer duvet does three things at once: it wicks away moisture, lets air circulate and doesn’t trap excess heat. It sounds simple, but not every filling manages it.
Natural goose down handles this exceptionally well. A few things you can do today
Before you reach for a new duvet, a few simple changes can noticeably improve the microclimate of a summer night:
Choose bedding made from natural fabrics – cotton, cambric or linen breathe incomparably better than microfibre, which can feel stuffy in summer despite being light.
Reduce your duvet’s weight for the season. If you sleep under the same thick duvet all year round, that’s the main cause of summer overheating. A light summer duvet is a different quality of sleep in the heat.
Air your bedding in the morning. Leaving the bed uncovered for a quarter of an hour after getting up lets the moisture gathered overnight evaporate, instead of sealing it under a bedspread for the whole day.
Keep air moving in the bedroom, but don’t aim the fan’s stream straight at yourself – it’s better to bounce it off a wall or the ceiling so the air circulates gently, without localised cooling.
